Why KCSC/KBCW uses Real Player
We are located on the campus of our licensee, The University
of Central Oklahoma. The University’s IT Department maintains large streaming
media web services for their sports, online educational, and outreach
activities. The University uses Real Media exclusively for their streaming
services. KCSC’s live streaming is hosted on those facilities at no charge to
the station and all we have to maintain here at the studios is a computer
running Helix (Real) Producer, the encoding step of creating a Real Player
stream. The University IT Department maintains the servers which place us
directly on the Internet through the State of Oklahoma Regents for Higher
Education’s statewide high speed fiber optic network. In the past it cost the
station as much as $1000 per month to use commercial streaming services which
were not as robust and versatile as what we get for free through UCO.
