What Causes LG Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Filling With Water? Troubleshooting and Diagnosis

LG Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Filling With Water

Let’s look at the possible causes and solutions for it.

Faulty Water Inlet Valve

The primary function of the water inlet valve is to supply water to the main dispenser unit. Normally, the water inlet valve should supply water at a speed of a minimum of 20 psi.

If the inlet water valve becomes faulty, then the ice maker will not get water. Please use a Multimeter to test the valve. We recommend replacing the defective water valve to solve the issue.

Please note that there are two main valves in the LG Fridge. In most cases, the valve which supplies water to the ice maker is faulty. But as a good habit, you need to check both valves.

The Water Filter is not Working

The water filter is an essential part of the refrigerator. It not only cleans the water but also makes it tasty by keeping all the minerals. It also plays an important role in keeping the continuous water supply to the dispenser.

If you observe a change in water taste, then most probably, the water filter has become faulty.

Put your fridge in test mode, and if the LG Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Filling With Water, then most probably your water filter is faulty.

Often, the filter is not correctly installed. Then the water will not be able to flow to the ice maker and water dispenser.

Try sliding the filter into the fridge housing and then push and twist the filter to lock it properly in its place.

If you have a new water filter and observe that there is a leakage in the LG ice maker, check the water pressure. Reducing water pressure can solve the issue.

If you have an old water filter, then replace it. The lifespan of the LG water filter depends on the frequency of usage, quality, water hardness, etc. But in any case, the LG recommends that you should change your filter at least twice a year.

Kinked Water Hose

You can find the water hose behind the LG Fridge. The water hose is connected to the water inlet valve and is crucial for water supply.

If you observe that hose is bent or kinked, it can result in water flow restriction to the inlet valve. So this may result in LG Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Filling With Water problem.

Bent water hose may allow some water, but it will not be enough, and hence ice maker will not work properly. So try to straighten the bent hose and replace the damaged hose.

Ice Maker is not Working

Please ensure that the ice maker is working correctly. Make sure that the ice maker cycles. In a good ice maker, the ice tray will turn. These all are a good indication. If you see anything other than this, then have it checked.

Perform a diagnostic test on the ice maker. If it fails the test, then there is an issue with the ice maker’s motor. You can also use a multimeter to ensure that the ice maker is getting power.

Faulty Control Board

All modern refrigerator comes with a control board. You can also call it the brain of the fridge.

Many times the control board becomes faulty and hence will not send power to parts of the refrigerator. This can cause the LG Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Filling With Water issue.

You must check the control board only after you have confirmed that other parts of the fridge are working fine. If the ice maker only works in reset mode, then there is an issue with the control board, or the optical sensor s are not working.

A small problem will not make the LG brand bad. It is one of the most trusted brands in the USA. Most of the issues are simple ones, and you can fix it quickly. If the issue is complex, then you can always rely on the customer service of LG.

I have an LG fridge and the Ice Maker isn’t getting any water to the Ice Tray. We just had to replace the circuit board of the fridge due to a different error and it ended up fixing the ice maker. After about two weeks the Ice tray stopped getting water again. The water line works and the motor works on the ice tray as i can troubleshoot that with a paperclip.

    Any Ideas?

We have the exact same problem with our ice maker in the bottom freezer drawer. When the ice maker unit is replaced it will work for about 1 day and then the water fails to fill the tray after a test cycle. Replace the unit with the old unit and again works for about a day and then fails in the same way.

  2. I have the same problem with my LG bottom drawer freezer ice maker. This is the 4th time I have had to replace it-and it still doesn’t work. It’s not getting water. The water hose is fine. What is the sloution??? Can someone please tell me!

  3. Ice maker not working….ice clumped in tray. Tray cleared of ice and 24 hours later still not making ice!!!

  4. after lg rep adjusted and calibrate my fridge now its noisy and look like the motor work all the time and now my ice maker not filing water.. call the service dept. told me iam no longer cover by warranty..

  5. Same problem plus no water is dispensed. Two repair persons could not solve problem. They replaced the main circuit board, checked water pressure, checked for clogged water lines, replaced water inlet valve/ solenoids, replaced filter assembly. Still have same problems. Not very happy with Sears Kenmore /LG.

    1. Barry, did you ever get a resolution? I have the same story as you, he just came today to replace the control board and still didn’t fix it.

  6. I am having the same problem with my ice maker in my bottom drawer. It would great if someone knew what the issue is and they could share that information with all of us. Please!

  7. you guys i had the i am not a fridge engineer but someone that like finding out why things dont work i had exactly the same problem with my ice maker.
Mine is an american style and if you switch off the power take out the ice container there is one screw that holds the the ice cube tray where the ice is frozen with this removed you can see the tube that fills the tray mine was blocked with ice, the tube has 2 wires going to it that are a heating element. i used a hair dryer for quite some time to melt the ice in the tube. somehow the connector had come slightly loose and was not making contact if it had not been that i would have tested for power going to the connector and then a loop or continuety going to the element/hose hope this helps

    1. I know this response is late, but may be useful. Just like others, the problem of no ice would appear solved for a day or two after repair, but would return when time for freezing the supply line was adequate–when the system had a few days to equilibrate. I found out by trial and error that the supply line freezes near the entry to the ice maker. I solved the crappy design problem by using a rubber band to attach some foam rubber sheeting to the supply line so that the heating element that keeps the line free of ice is no longer over-powered by the cold air circulation. This has worked reliably for over a year. But now is seems that the water is again not flowing, so I am seeking the present problem, which may or may not not be of similar cause. LG seems innovative, but this issue shows a serious neglect to follow good quality practices.

  8. I got water in the tray by pressing the test button on the bottom. Located front left on bottom of the unit. It filled up with water I did this several times. Hopefully it was just air locked from changing the filter. 🤷‍♂️

When I push the reset button, it I can hear the water being dispensed. But only a tricke comes to the ice maker. Then it stops. The ice isnt being made. What to do next?

  10. So I replaced the valve assembly and that fixed my no water issue, replaced the filter and that fixed the low water flow issue but started the ice maker not working! So I removed the cover on the back which protects the valve assembly and other precious plastic moving parts and hit the ice maker reset 6 times as was suggested in the comments. Success! The ice maker began filling again and has now been working for a few weeks. Hope this helps

  11. LG ice maker feels for like 3 seconds and that’s it and then I have to push the button underneath to get the ice to drop what’s my problem thank you

  12. I have no water going out of the ice maker, but the water dispenser is fine. I replaced the water inter valve but it did not fix it. Still no water. I also replaced the filter , the main board and ice maker fan motor , but still not working. What should I do next? I have French door LG refrigerator
